How Is a Boiler Different?

Furnaces, heat pumps, and boilers are very much alike in that they all will heat your Centennial, CO, home. One of their biggest differences lies in how they heat your home. A boiler generates hot water or steam and then utilizes that to heat your home.

The boiler’s hot water is typically distributed via baseboard radiators or radiant floor heating systems, while its steam is distributed by way of pipes to steam radiators throughout your home. Instead of delivering this heating directly into the air, your boiler system’s heat warms objects in your home, like your floors, furniture, and walls. These items, in turn, then radiate that warmth to heat your home.

Most boilers are sealed systems. This means they reuse the water or steam in their systems—they don’t waste it. The recirculation and reuse process is one of the factors that makes boilers so efficient. Boilers use very little energy to reheat the returning water since it still contains heat.

What Are the Advantages of a Boiler?

If you’re considering installing or retrofitting a boiler in your Centennial, CO, home, here are a few advantages to help you with your decision:

  • Boilers cost less to operate. They are inherently so efficient in their operation, running them keeps their costs pretty low. Their up-front costs may be a little more than other heating choices, but their annual energy costs more than make up for that, still giving them an edge here.
  • Boilers are a cleaner form of heating. Since the heat emanates from the pipes or radiator into the existing air, there’s no new air being blown into your home. In contrast to forced-air systems, this means no new pathogens or allergens are introduced into your home’s air. This is better for your indoor air quality (IAQ).
  • Boilers operate quietly. Forced-air systems tend to be noisier with their air being blown through ductwork and out via vents.
  • Boilers are environmentally friendly. Since boilers are able to burn recycled and sustainable fuels like biodiesel, they’re becoming more popular with homeowners who prefer environmentally friendly options.

“Ben was on time, friendly and knowledgable. He walked me through the operation of my boiler and explained several things were poorly set up by an installer from a different, now defunct company. Ben proposed repairs and upgrades that appear to be well advised. I found what he told me to be accurate and in good faith. I would recommend Quality West to my family and friends.”

“Quality West installed my boiler a couple of years ago, and every year Matt comes to service it. Matt is terrific–he's efficient, professional, and knowledgable, plus he answers all of my questions. He's careful to explain how everything works and teaches me what to watch for to identify problems early. He also is nice to my pets who want "help" him. I wouldn't hire anyone but Quality West for my heating and cooling needs.”

“I went to the basement and discovered water flooding through the window and wall at 4:30 pm on a Saturday afternoon. I realized it had to be a burst pipe which connected to a baseboard radiator on the floor above. I called Rob’s cell and he called me back in a matter of minutes. Within 30 minutes he and Bob were at my house figuring out where the leak in the pipe was. They found one and then found another. The layout of the pipe was odd (outside the foundation) and they had to be creative in building a new pipe so that it wouldn’t freeze again. They were cheerful, informative, and gracious. They worked hard and got it repaired with minimal damage to drywall and building. I was amazed that they were able to get it all functional before they left. The price was quite reasonable given how long it took and that it was a Saturday night.”

“Rob and his team (Bob, Dave, Steven) did a great job replacing our old boiler. Rob really knows boilers, and the new installation is a "work of art" with the way all the piping, etc. was laid out against their installed metal wall clading. They were able to add another zone so that our heating is more efficient and in exactly the areas that we want at any particular time. Their cleanup was great–they left the basement floor cleaner than it was before they started the job. I won't hesitate to use Rob/Quality West for all our future boiler servicing. Thanks for a great job guys!”
